Case Study

Equipment Upgrades at Boston Children's Hospital Waltham Campus Ensure Reliability and Operational Efficiency

SMI Impact

Operational efficiency and long-term reliability for the hospital's steam demands

Estimated Annual Savings of $32,165 from Blowdown Heat Recovery

Significant energy savings and carbon footprint reduction

Customer

Boston Children's Hospital, Waltham Campus

Problem

The existing deaerator and associated feedwater pumps were past their useful life and no longer reliable, necessitating a replacement to meet current and future steam demands efficiently.

Conditions

The project required meticulous planning to ensure minimal disruption to hospital operations. The new system needed to be modern and efficient to meet stringent operational requirements.

Solution

Steam Management Inc. provided a comprehensive solution, including engineering design, project management, and turnkey installation. The project was divided into three phases:

Engineering Design:

  • Structured design phases with clear stage gates at 30% and 60% completion for client feedback.

  • Conducted contractor walk-downs post 60% design approval to finalize installation pricing and schedules.

  • Regular project meetings and updates to ensure alignment between SMI, BCH, and contractors.

Turnkey Installation and Commissioning:

  • Managed the entire installation process, including the removal of the old deaerator, installation of the new deaerator and pumps, and interconnecting piping and controls.

  • Delivered a fully functional deaeration and feedwater delivery system.

  • Provided as-built drawings and final vendor submittals, ensuring a smooth handover and operational readiness.

Blowdown Heat Recovery Equipment:

  • Implemented to optimize energy usage and maximize cost savings due to anticipated benefits from fuel and water reduction, utility incentives, and potential carbon tax offsets.

  • Captures and reuses energy from the boiler's blowdown process, contributing to a substantial decrease in fuel and water usage, and thus operational costs.

  • Estimated Savings:

    • 790 MMBtu/year of natural gas energy savings

    • 42 tons CO2/year carbon footprint reduction

    • Estimated total 1st year savings: $47,963

    • Estimated annual savings: $32,165

Key Actions

  • Conducted an initial site visit for data collection and 3D scanning.

  • Developed design recommendations and detailed design documentation.

  • Progressed through structured design phases with client feedback.

  • Conducted contractor walk-downs to finalize installation pricing and schedules.

  • Managed the turnkey installation process, including removal and installation of equipment.

  • Coordinated system commissioning and provided as-built drawings and final vendor submittals.

  • Implemented blowdown heat recovery equipment to optimize energy usage and maximize cost savings.
